The global mortality rate among children under 5 has plummeted in the last several decades. As we kick off 2017, Fast Company, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) want to share those success stories – as well as lay the groundwork for the work there still is to do. IHME holds a vast data store that can help ground stories and help the world see and understand the causes and impacts of both successes and opportunities. Our challenge is to bring them to life in a way that grabs attention and engages hearts and minds.

These data have been used by a stellar line-up of artists and designers to illustrate the steep decline in under-5 mortality rates since 1990. See all submissions from the following artists here:

  • Gail Anderson
  • Michael Bierut
  • Stephen Doyle
  • Chip Kidd
  • Debbie Millman
