Professor of Global Health Ali Mokdad gives an exclusive first look at new data on alcohol use for every county in the US at Health Journalism 2015, the Association of Health Care Journalists’ (AHCJ) annual conference. Dr. Mokdad shows how to download the data and use an innovative mapping tool to explore trends in alcohol use, heavy drinking, and binge drinking over two decades. The findings are from a new paper by the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) at the University of Washington, published in the American Journal of Public Health.

IHME Director Christopher Murray participates in the panel discussion “The big picture: measuring the health of cities and states, countries and continents,” moderated by Jeremy N. Smith, author of the forthcoming book Epic Measures: One Doctor, Seven Billion Patients, which tells the story of Dr. Murray’s tireless pursuit of answers to these big-picture questions, from childhood through his current work at IHME.
