The Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation and the Department of Health Metrics Sciences within the School of Medicine at the University of Washington are recruiting to fill one full-time faculty position at the Assistant Professor without tenure (WOT) level. * Assistant Professors in the Department of Health Metrics Sciences have an annual service period of 12 months (July 1 – June 30) and is a multi-year appointment. Anticipated start in July 2019.
The incumbent will identify ways to strengthen existing national and subnational (including geospatial) estimates of vaccine coverage and vaccine preventable disease (VPD) burden approaches through iterative model improvement and methodological innovation in order to keep science as cutting-edge as possible and take advantage of emerging technologies. This will include for vaccine coverage: assessment and critique of data; adapting the national and geospatial modeling frameworks to extend models to additional vaccines and data sources (e.g., administrative data); decide which analytic strategies to test and how best to deploy methods and coding techniques; and will critique, refine, and finalize estimates in order to produce final results and maps. On estimating disease burden this will include: modeling of causes of death, non-fatal health outcomes, and risk factor exposures using data from a multitude of sources and applying complex algorithms in novel statistical applications developed at IHME. The incumbent's duties will include generation and critique of these results in light of trends in the available data and epidemiological and clinical assumptions where appropriate, determine whether adjustments to models or model assumptions should be made, and analyze results in consultation with other faculty. Incumbent is expected to present the results both internally and externally and to contribute to appropriate peer reviewed journal articles and policy reports pertaining to them. The incumbent is expected to contribute to the expansion of vaccine coverage and VPD research for the Institute, including the expansion of network of collaborators.
Faculty members will also take on an important leadership role in mentoring predoctoral and postdoctoral fellows working in the field of health metrics. All University of Washington faculty engage in teaching, research, and service. Salary and benefits are competitive and commensurate with experience.
*Faculty appointed WOT do not hold tenure because all or part of their annual University-administered salary is derived from sources other than regularly appropriated state funds. Except for this distinction, WOT faculty members have the same rights, responsibilities, and obligations as tenure-track and tenured faculty members at those ranks.
The successful applicants will have an MD and MPH or PhD in statistics, spatial statistics, ecology, epidemiology, genetics, population health, related field or foreign equivalent. The successful applicant will have a proven record of quantitative research in a health-related field including statistical modeling using multiple and large data sets. Record of quantitative research linked directly to vaccines is required.
