Caries of deciduous teeth — Level 4 cause

Summary Caries of deciduous teeth caused 200 000 YLDs (95% UI 86 900–426 000) globally in 2019 among children and adolescents under 20 years old. There were 520 million (415–634) prevalent cases and 1·15 billion (0·788–1·52) incident cases in 2019.

Definition Caries of deciduous teeth is defined as primary dentition showing unmistakable cavity, undermined enamel, a detectably softened floor or wall, a tooth with a temporary filling or a tooth that is filled but also decayed is present, or teeth extracted due to caries.

What is new in GBD 2019?
  • •We updated systematic review of prevalence and incidence using SCIELO (http://scielo.org) and LILACS (https://lilacs.bvsalud.org), two online databases for health and science literature primarily from Latin America and the Caribbean, which identified 77 new sources across all oral disorders.
  • •We revised data processing to include age-sex splitting of data using location-year-specific empirical age-sex pattern from detailed data and adjustment for alternate definitions (alternates = lifetime prevalence multiplied by d/dmf ratio; incidence calculated from dmfs increment) using MR-BRT prior to DisMod-MR 2.1 modelling.
  • •We revised DisMod-MR 2.1 covariates to use SEV high sugar-sweetened beverages for incidence and LN-LDI for prevalence.
