HIV/AIDS — Level 3 cause

Summary Globally in 2019, the number of HIV-related deaths was 864 000 (95% UI 786 000–996 000) and the number of new HIV infections was 1·99 million (1·76–2·26). The majority of this burden was seen in the sub-Saharan Africa super-region, which accounted for 74·0% (71·4–76·9) of global HIV-related deaths and 64·9% (61·1–69·1) of new HIV infections in 2019.

Definition The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) causes influenza-like symptoms during the acute period following infection, and can lead to acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) if untreated. HIV attacks the immune system, leaving infected individuals more susceptible to opportunistic infections like tuberculosis. We do not distinguish between HIV-1 and HIV-2.

What is new in GBD 2019?
  • •To estimate age-specific and sex-specific HIV incidence, prevalence, and mortality in countries in sub-Saharan Africa, we switched from using Spectrum to a new model—Estimation and Projection Package—Age-Sex Model (EPP-ASM).
  • •Bias associated with the location of antenatal care (ANC) clinics was adjusted using spatial information. This adjustment was an improvement on our previous method, which imputed earlier years of prevalence data based on regional averages of the epidemic peak year.
