Maternal disorders — Level 3 cause

Summary Maternal disorders was responsible for 196 000 deaths (95% UI 171 000–226 000) among females aged 10–54 in 2019, a 35·1% (25·4–45·4) decrease since 1990. There were 112 million (99·3–126) incident cases of maternal disorders in 2019, an 8·7% (5·9–11·3) decrease since 1990.

Definition Fatal or non-fatal complications occurring during pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period. Maternal deaths are due to obstetric complications or existing disorders exacerbated by pregnancy, up to one year post-pregnancy, excluding accidental and incidental deaths.

What is new in GBD 2019?
  • •Non-fatal data were age-split to fit GBD five-year age groups. Adjustments for alternative study methods and case definitions were applied to data prior to analysis in DisMod-MR 2.1.
  • •A systematic review was conducted on May 10, 2019, and found 81 new data sources for both maternal deaths and non-fatal outcomes.
  • •Cause of death garbage code redistribution was revised for the youngest and oldest maternal age groups.
  • •Covariates based on the sub-cause-specific maternal mortality ratios (MMR) were used in the DisMod-MR 2.1 models estimating incidence ratios.
  • •An ensemble model was used to select covariates for the sub-cause-specific MMR models.
