Dr. Samba Sow, a Malian physician and Professor at the University of Maryland, will receive $100,000 for using health data to save children’s lives through a comprehensive vaccination program. Dr. Sow generated and used metrics on the disease burden related to Hib – Haemophilus influenzae type b disease – and used the metrics to secure political and financial support to vaccinate thousands of children against the disease. He spearheaded a nationwide delivery campaign for the vaccine, and, as a result, the country has seen an 80% decline in new Hib cases.

Dr. John Q. Wong, a Filipino epidemiologist and professor, has been awarded IHME's annual Roux Prize for using health data to identify the most taxing health problems in the Philippines, helping his country expand health coverage and reduce the costs involved.
