We are looking for someone ready to advance in their career in global health research. As a Gender Research Officer, you will interface with the technical team to understand the core research activities across our portfolio, and translate the scientific underpinnings, results, and implications for internal and external communication purposes. Working with IHME media and communications staff in partnership with external stakeholders, you will generate materials for a broad range of internal and external audiences, including senior leadership, technical, policy makers, academic, and lay readers, with the ultimate goal of increasing uptake and use of the evidence generated by IHME and the Gender Equality Metrics team specifically by global partners. As part of the Gender Equality Metrics team, you will facilitate relationship management with a distinguished group of global Subject Matter Experts, including facilitating meetings, soliciting input on the analytical process, and engaging on dissemination and uptake.
Within IHME, you will work also across GBD teams to enable the systematic and effective integration of gender considerations into research streams. GBD teams analyze and produce key estimates for their research areas and assess all available relevant quantitative data – including those on causes of death, epidemiology, and a range of determinants such as education and income – from surveys, vital registration, censuses, literature, registries, and administrative records. You will provide feedback on gaps identified or opportunities for improvement. You will be integrally involved in advising GBD teams on designing strategies to integrate gender perspective into various aspects of the research activities. You will translate high quality analyses into key insights and recommendations, and critique, improve, and translate results for dissemination.
You already have experience in gender equality endeavors, knowledge of the global health landscape, including key institutions and partners in this field, and the ability to interpret and translate complex scientific evidence. You will have a demonstrated interest in research related to measuring gender equality. Deep familiarity with epidemiological and statistical concepts is a plus; we will help you develop an understanding of our core research and methodology. This role works with senior research leads and external collaborators and take part in the intellectual exchange about how to improve upon and disseminate the results.
You are expected to interact successfully with a wide range of partners and to describe complex concepts and materials concisely. Overall, the Gender Research Officer is a critical member of an agile, dynamic research team. This position is contingent on project funding availability.

- Engage a global group of Subject Matter Experts, advocates, policy makers, and other partners in a meaningful way to enhance the uptake and use of the evidence generated by the Gender Equality Metrics team and IHME.
- Review, assess, and translate results into a wide range of formats for dissemination and uptake. Write and produce custom content such as reports, briefs, web content, blog posts, and presentations that communicate key aspects of complex research projects in concise and comprehensible ways for decision-makers, policy influencers, and other key stakeholders in all geographic settings.
- Maintain scientific awareness and intellectual agility with developments in the global field of gender research, policy, data, and results.
- Other duties as assigned that fall within reasonable scope of research team.
- Master’s degree plus eight years’ experience in public health, epidemiology, statistics, quantitative social sciences, or related discipline.

- Proven interest and multi-country experience in the field of gender equality and related methodological research, and with the relevant data sources and scientific underpinnings.
- Strong analytic, critical thinking, and scientific evidence interpretation skills.
- Knowledge of, and ideally experience working with, the key global partners in the field of gender equality.
- Adept diplomacy and exemplary interpersonal skills in a range of geographic and cultural contexts required. Must be agile at forming respectful and rewarding relationships with people with different levels of experience and expertise from a variety of cultural, linguistic, and professional settings to achieve team goals for the analyses and related outputs.
- Results- and detail-oriented individual who can initiate and complete tasks under tight deadlines and changing priorities both independently and in a team environment. Flexibility with hours and workload is key.
- Excellent communication skills, both oral and written, as well as excellent facilitation and public speaking skills.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
- Preferred background in Women’s Studies, Social Science, or related fields focused on gender issues.
- Track record of success in co-authorship on scientific papers, presenting results, and representing research at meetings.
- Gender strategy development and implementation-related experience at the international level preferred, ideally within a public health program.
- PhD degree in public health, epidemiology, statistics, quantitative social sciences, or related discipline.
- Weekend and evening work sometimes required.
