Stephen Lim

Professor; Sr. Director, Science and Engineering

Steve is a Professor of Health Metrics Sciences, Senior Director of Science and Engineering at the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME), and an Adjunct Professor of Health Services at the University of Washington. He leads the Integrated Analytics team. Steve is highly active in the Global Burden of Disease study, with a specific interest in methods. He also is highly engaged in IHME’s experimental work using large language models.

As Director of Science and Engineering, he oversees the teams dedicated to central computation, enterprise data management, and scientific computing, which support the Institute’s central modeling tools, databases, and computational machinery necessary to produce health indicators. Trained in epidemiology and health economics, he also leads work generating high-quality estimates of global indicators to chart progress toward the Global Goals for Sustainable Development. Steve received his PhD in Epidemiology and Health Economics from Monash University.

Prior to joining IHME in 2007, Steve was a Senior Research Fellow at the School of Population Health at the University of Queensland, based at the Ministry of Public Health in Thailand, where he led a major project on health information system capacity building with a focus on burden of disease and cost-effectiveness analysis. Previously, he worked at the Evidence and Information for Policy Cluster at the World Health Organization, where he was a key member of the Choosing Interventions that are Cost-Effective project. He has been a member of numerous international expert groups, including the Technical Advisory Group for the US President’s Malaria Initiative Impact Evaluation and The Lancet’s Chronic Disease Action Group.
