GBD Data

Reviewing data sources for the GBD study

The Global Burden of Disease Study aims to use all available data on mortality, morbidity and risk factors for all countries, by sex and age, from 1980 to present. As a Collaborator, one of the ways you may wish to contribute is by improving the evidence base for the GBD estimates for your country or condition of interest.

One of the core principles of burden or disease methods is to utilize the totality of data available and to correct for biases in each one. The Global Health Data Exchange (GHDx) is a good starting point to conduct a data inventory as IHME has cataloged a number of sources already, including all of the data currently utilized in the GBD. To see the data sources that inform the latest round of GBD estimates, you may download a list from the source query tool. Select “citation download” when exporting the list. Reviewing these data sources is an important step in identifying gaps in the existing data and priorities for data additions.
