Chlamydial infection — Level 4 cause

Summary Chlamydia resulted in 160 000 global DALYs (95% UI 114 000–223 000) in 2019, accounting for 2·1% (0·9–4·4) of DALYs from all sexually transmitted infections excluding HIV.

Definition Chlamydia is a sexually transmitted infection caused by the Chlamydia trachomatis bacteria. Severe infections can lead to epididymo-orchitis in males or pelvic inflammatory disease in females, which can lead to female infertility.

What is new in GBD 2019?
  • •Adjustments for alternative diagnostic methods and case-definitions were applied to data prior to analysis in DisMod-MR. Validation studies comparing the number of cases identified by PCR, wet mount, or culture diagnostic tests were used to develop adjustment factors.
  • •Adult deaths due to STI were split into syphilis, gonorrhoea, chlamydia, and other STI using proportions specific to age, sex, and super-region. In previous GBD cycles, these proportions were only estimated at the global level.
