Summary Chronic kidney disease (CKD) due to diabetes type 2 was responsible for 9·87 million (95% UI 8·11–11·7) DALYs and 23·8% (19·8–27·7) of total overall CKD DALYs.
Definition This causes incorporates death and disability due to chronic kidney disease caused by diabetes type 2.

Table 1:
Total sources used in GBD 2019 estimation
What is new in GBD 2019?
- •We assigned all CKD due to diabetes before age 20 to diabetes type 1.
- •Excess mortality data (EMR) were modelled in MR-BRT by age and sex as a function of HAQ Index.
- •Adjustments for alternative CKD estimating equations were applied prior to DisMod-MR. These adjustments increased estimates for stage 3 but resulted in small changes for stages 4 and 5 compared to previous rounds of GBD. The reference estimating equation is CKD-EPI.
