Chronic kidney disease — Level 3 cause

Summary Chronic kidney disease (CKD) was responsible for 41·5 million (95% UI 38·3–45·0) DALYs in 2019. Age-standardised DALY rates were highest in central and Andean Latin America, at 1348·1 (1203·6–1521·6) and 836·3 (704·2–981·6) per 100 000, respectively (global rate was 514·9 [474·9–558·9]).

Definition This cause incorporates death and disability due to CKD defined as an estimated glomerular filtration rate less than 60 ml/min/1.73m2 or albumin to creatinine ratio >30mg/g. This includes those with end-stage kidney disease who are on dialysis or have had a transplant.

What is new in GBD 2019?
  • •Excess mortality data were modelled in MR-BRT by age and sex as a function of HAQ Index.
  • •Adjustments for alternative CKD estimating equations were applied prior to DisMod-MR. These adjustments led to somewhat higher estimates for stage 3 estimations but little change for stages 4 and 5 CKD.
