Cirrhosis and other chronic liver diseases due to alcohol use — Level 4 cause

Summary Cirrhosis and other chronic liver diseases due to alcohol use resulted in 11·2 million (95% UI 9·45–13·1) global DALYs in 2019.

Definition Cirrhosis and other chronic liver diseases due to alcohol use includes conditions in which there is progressive destruction of hepatic cells and replacement with fibrosis from alcohol consumption.

Table 1: Total sources used in GBD 2019 estimation
What is new in GBD 2019?
  • •Bias adjustment for claims data to hospital data in the USA was estimated using MR-BRT and applied to data, lowering claims data values differentially by age prior to analysis in DisMod-MR 2.1.
  • •Excess mortality data (EMR) were modelled in MR-BRT by age and sex as a function of the HAQ Index to provide greater guidance to DisMod-MR on expected pattern of EMR.
  • •We added mild, moderate, and severe anaemia health states to decompensated cirrhosis based on a review of the mean haemoglobin shift of 18 g/L in people with cirrhosis.
