Cocaine use disorders — Level 4 cause

Summary Cocaine use disorders resulted in 1·15 million (95% UI 0·933–1·43) global DALYs in 2019 and were responsible for 0·05% (0·04–0·06) of total global DALYs.

Definition Cocaine dependence is a substance-related disorder involving a dysfunctional pattern of cocaine use. Included in the GBD disease modelling were cases meeting DSM or ICD diagnostic criteria.

Table 1: Total sources used in GBD 2019 estimation
What is new in GBD 2019?
  • •Based on multiple cause of death data we reassigned a larger proportion of deaths coded as undetermined intent to suicide rather than drug use disorders as was done previously based on expert opinion. The net effect of this change was a decrease in estimates of deaths due to cocaine use disorders in locations in which there was an evident preference for assigning deaths to undetermined intent codes.
  • •Used MR-BRT to adjust estimates from studies using two alternative case definitions, those measuring cocaine use as opposed to dependence and those using direct methods such as household surveys rather than triangulating between data sources, indirect methods which are our reference because they better capture all cases in the community.
