Conflict and terrorism — Level 3 cause

Summary Conflict and terrorism was responsible for 63 000 deaths (95% UI 57 200–69 300) in 2019. Of these deaths, 47 500 (43 100–52 300) occurred in locations with low SDIs and 34 (31–37) occurred in locations with high SDIs.

Definition Conflict is armed violence between states, governments, and societies with destruction, mortality, and use of military forces. Terrorism is the unlawful or threatened use of force or violence against individuals to achieve political, religious, or ideological objectives.

Table 1: Total sources used in GBD 2019 estimation
What is new in GBD 2019?
  • •The Armed Conflict Location & Event Data Project (ACLED) and Uppsala Conflict Data Program (UCDP) were updated to include new estimates for recent years.
  • •Location mapping was improved by implementing a hierarchy, with the most trusted method for mapping raw data to GBD locations implemented first and all other methods following in succession, ensuring the results retained the most accurate information from each hierarchy level. The location mapping hierarchy utilised string matching, GPS coordinates, and feedback from collaborators.
  • •Events spanning multiple years were split using rates informed by the number of months covered in each year.
  • •Collaborators provided updates to key fatal discontinuity events that improved accuracy of estimates.
