India State-Level Disease Burden Initiative

The India State-Level Disease Burden Initiative was launched in October 2015. It is a collaboration between the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), the Public Health Foundation of India (PHFI), the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME), and senior experts and stakeholders from about 100 institutions across India.

  • This Initiative reported an unprecedented, comprehensive assessment of the diseases causing the most premature deaths and ill health in each state of the country, the risk factors responsible for this burden, and their trends spanning 26 years, from 1990 to 2016.
  • The burden from 333 disease conditions and injuries and 84 risk factors was computed for each state of India as part of the Global Burden of Disease Study 2016.

What areas of US health do we study?

The Global Burden of Disease (GBD) study measures the toll of early death and disability caused by more than 300 diseases and injuries.

  • The study produces estimates of life expectancy, causes of death, and nonfatal health loss for the US as a whole and for all 50 states and the District of Columbia.
  • Results are available by age group and sex for each cause of death and disability and more than 80 risk factors, from 1990 to the present.
