Unintentional injuries — Level 2 cause

Summary Unintentional injuries was responsible for 1·77 million (95% UI 1·55–1·95) deaths in 2019. The age-standardised death rate from unintentional injuries decreased from 30·3 per 100 000 (27·3–32·2) in 2010 to 23·1 per 100 000 (20·2–25·4) in 2019.

Definition Death or bodily damage due to an injury that was unplanned or caused by external factors.

Table 1: Total sources used in GBD 2019 estimation
What is new in GBD 2019?
  • •The ratio of outpatient to inpatient care was modelled in MR-BRT for each sub-cause prior to modelling in DisMod-MR 2.1. The MR-BRT ratio modelling step produced an estimated age pattern for the ratio of outpatient cases to inpatient cases, which added more precise age adjustments in the estimation of outpatient injury burden. Across these sub-causes, hospital data were adjusted to account for location-specific access to medical care using a scalar derived from the HAQ Index.
  • •Population-weighted mean temperature was added as a new covariate in CODEm models.
