Published April 21, 2022

Dr. Ali H. Mokdad, professor at the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) and Chief Strategy Officer of population health at the University of Washington, was named as one of the Ramadan Top 30 Illuminators of 2022. Every year, the Hayat Life magazine recognizes 30 influential cultural Muslims – one for each day of Ramadan – who are making remarkable contributions to society.

“I am grateful for this recognition and thrilled to be counted among the outstanding honorees. My family taught me the importance of helping others, which is why I'm proud to be a part of IHME's global mission to help all people live longer, healthier lives,” said Dr. Mokdad. "Being a member of a dynamic team of faculty, researchers, and staff allows me to make an impact in my community and beyond."

Dr. Mokdad has been instrumental in communicating on the ever-changing nature of the COVID-19 pandemic, regularly providing insights in media outlets such as The New York Times, CNN, and Bloomberg. He also serves as IHME’s director of Middle Eastern initiatives, collaborating with health leaders and building the Institute’s presence in the region. Dr. Mokdad has published more than 550 articles and reports and was most recently the senior author for a publication on the burden of injury in older people in the Eastern Mediterranean region.

Other individuals named to the third edition of the Ramadan Top 30 Illuminators awards include Emine Dzheppar, Ukraine’s first Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs, Khadjou Sambe, Senegal’s first female professional surfer, and Salman Ahmed, the US State Department’s Director of Policy Planning Staff. Please join us in congratulating Dr. Mokdad for this honor.
