What is it like to work at IHME?

The world is a challenging place, but you believe that focused individuals can make a difference in a big way. You love a mission-driven endeavor, and enjoy teamwork, learning, and a dynamic setting.

If this sounds like you, then the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME), housed at the University of Washington's Hans Rosling Center, could be your next and last employer!

We are a research institute. Our mission is to deliver to the world timely, relevant, and scientifically valid evidence so that policymakers and decision makers can craft evidence-based policies and practices that help folks get and stay healthy. Specifically, we aspire to make available the highest quality information on population health and the factors that determine this state of health, as well as on the performance of health systems. We do this directly and by catalyzing the work of others, as well as by training researchers and policymakers around the globe. At our heart, we are a big data population health machine.

In working alongside us, you will create or contribute to the making of uniquely impactful, global products. Our COVID-19 modeling work captured the world’s attention, including that of the White House COVID Task Force. Critical to our mission is peer review and scientific criticism. In any given year we are publishing upwards of 150 articles in peer-reviewed, high-impact journals. Our papers have been cited by other authors more than 117,000 times since 2007. IHME operates the world’s most comprehensive catalog of surveys, vital statistics, and other health-related data, containing tens of thousands of records. Our 2019 Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors study contained more than 3.5 billion estimates for 204 countries and territories. Some faculty members have made the list more than once of the World’s Most Influential Scientific Minds.

What does working with us look like on a daily basis? It looks like a Data Services Specialist meeting with a research team to understand the type of data we need to seek in Europe. It looks like a Data Extraction Analyst arranging that data into a useable form for our modelers who, thanks to a suite of cutting-edge, bespoke analytic tools built by software engineers, create estimates of disease burden used by our 5,000+ scientific collaborators in 152 countries. And it looks like being an Engagement Officer and routinely interacting with those scientific collaborators throughout the world. These processes and teams are surrounded by a myriad of faculty and staff specializing in data science, management, scientific publications, policy engagement, financial management, fundraising, training, organizational affairs, media relations, library science, and information technology.

IHME is proud of its partnerships with some of the most laudable global health organizations in the world. We work closely with the World Health Organization and are trusted by some of the most influential multi-donor organizations and philanthropies to produce estimates that guide their strategies.
