Luisa Sorio Flor

Assistant Professor

Luisa Sorio Flor, MSc, PhD, is an Assistant Professor at the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) and the Department of Health Metrics Sciences at the University of Washington. In this role, she co-leads the Gender Equality Metrics team, dedicated to investigating the multifaceted social barriers impeding gender equality in health and developing a robust metric for measuring the impact of gender-based violence on health outcomes. In addition to her work on gender equality, Dr. Sorio Flor works on the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors (GBD) Study, leading the effort to estimate the disease burden attributable to tobacco-related risk factors and to assess the impact of tobacco control measures globally. Dr. Sorio Flor's comprehensive work on what disables and kills people across countries, time, age, and sex is a critical tool for understanding where health disparities exist and for identifying actionable pathways toward more equitable health outcomes.

Originally from Brazil, Dr. Sorio Flor earned both her master's and doctoral degrees in Public Health from the National School of Public Health in Brazil. Following her PhD, Dr. Sorio Flor undertook a postdoctoral fellowship at IHME, where she primarily worked on the GBD study. During this time, she developed innovative methodologies for analyzing complex behavioral risk factor data and evaluating the impact of policies and programs aimed at combating non-communicable diseases in low- and middle-income countries. Dr. Sorio Flor is also passionate about teaching and mentoring students, research fellows, and local stakeholders on measuring what matters.
