About this tool

In this data visualization, we examine current and past trends in tobacco use across Mexico to understand where progress has been made and where gaps still exist. Given recent statistical innovations, we can also forecast into the future. What we observe is progress since 1990, with tobacco now outside of the top five leading risks for death countrywide. Notably our estimation models do not account for future changes in tobacco control policies. In spite of this, we anticipate continued relative declines in adverse health outcomes from tobacco by 2030.
